Delapré Abbey is Northampton’s hidden treasure, located just a mile or so from the town centre. Surrounded by beautiful parkland, this exceptional attraction is a perfect day out for all. The Abbey is open 6 days a week and children can experience it all for free.
As a visitor of this unique building, you’ll experience tales of the Abbey told across five storytelling zones, you’ll investigate unexpected views and strange doorways and be free to play with the classic have-a-go games. From snakes and ladders in the library to medieval costumes in the battlefield rooms, there is no shortage of exciting elements for children to get stuck in to.
The Abbey has been designed to be engaging for visitors of all ages and we welcome families with the hands-on, interactive displays. You can learn about the history of the building and its many eccentric characters, enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the gardens and enjoy freshly prepared food and refreshments in our Orangery café.
Alongside the interactive experiences of the Abbey itself, Delapré also has a packed family friendly events schedule.
This summer Delapré will also play host to many other activities to keep young people entertained from trails around our walled garden to dedicated children’s zones
The Battle of Northampton event on the 7th and 8th July, will take a step back in time to the medieval era and see the grounds fill with knights ready for battle. A thrilling re-enactment will take place along with lots of have-a-go activities and an enchanting medieval market.
From the 6th – 12th August the grounds will turn into a traditional seaside town of Delapré by the Sea, with fairground attractions including a vintage helter-skelter and hook-a-duck. There will also be lots of seaside food classics like fish and chips and big bags of candy floss. The event brings you all the fun of the seaside right on your doorstep.
The Abbey will also host a traditional village fete on August 27th with swing boat rides, a coconut shy, face painting and more. During the event there will also be the judging of our home-grown competition with entries of homemade preserves, home-grown vegetables and lovingly produced cakes. Open to all ages, a talented young contestant may be in with a chance of winning!
