Northampton based Goodwill Solutions Community Interest Company is one of the county’s stand out commercially successful social enterprises. Its Learning Academy is an approved training provider for the Skills Funding Agency & Department of Work and Pensions, an Apprenticeships training provider and is on the NHS list of approved Apprenticeship training organisations.
The Learning Academy works to create a cultural shift in our society to enable those suffering disadvantages to gain access to training and employment opportunities. We look to find ways to deliver meaningful change in society and to add value to communities. We work to create a vehicle which will deliver apprenticeships, work experience programmes, vocational employment, pre-employment activities and many other socially motivated activities.
The Learning academy also delivers the Big Lottery Building Better Opportunity co-funded by the European Social Fund programme supporting learners to gain the skills they need to find employment, working with partners and organisations throughout Northamptonshire.
Work Readiness Action Programme
The funded courses available cover a wide array of areas. The Work Readiness Action Programme (WRAP) aims to support unemployed people, many with distinct barriers, such as homelessness, to achieve sustainable full time employment by offering a range of meaningful support including; improvement of their social mobility, supporting the next step in their progression for further education, coaching and mentoring, or assistance to deal with precarious housing positions.
The programme also provides:
• pre-employment training
• access to Construction Skills Certificate Scheme card
• work experience that leads to vocational qualifications such as warehousing and mechanical handling
The Construction Skills Certificate Scheme card (CSCS) is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry. CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out. The Mechanical Handling training leads to a R.T.I.T.B certification and an NVQ level 1 in warehouse duties. Both of these support individuals in finding employment. Whichever route you choose, the programme also ensures you would gain help with creating a CV and job searching.
Gary’s experience: “I joined the programme in February 2017 after serving time in prison. Through WRAP, I passed my Reach and Counter Balance truck licences and earned an NVQ in Warehousing and Storage.”
Skills 4 Work
Another one of the programmes is called Skills 4 Work. This is a course helping unemployed people be one step closer to employment covering practical elements such as CV writing and interview skills, but more importantly, behavioural skills such as:
• confidence building
• listening skills
It’s an interactive course that helps learners realise their own potential through a carefully crafted programme that is flexible to the learners needs. Mark joined the Skills 4 work programme after he had struggled to find employment and had taken on voluntary work for some years. Mark had learning difficulties and mobility issues. The programme was a great step in the right direction for Mark, helping him with time keeping and interview skills and he realised he was a lot smarter than he gave himself credit for.
We offer a childminding introductory training programme across a course of 5 modules which is recognised by Ofsted and easily accessible as it is offered through a mix of online and classroom delivery. Through this programme you would also cover paediatric first aid and we would work to provide a DBS check. Following completion of the course we can provide help with medical checks, public liability insurance and we would work with Childminding UK who can offer you support to become a registered Childminder.
Another key area we work with organisations and individuals on is Apprenticeships. We can help organisations with explaining how apprenticeships work, training need analysis, identifying suitable programmes and training providers and assisting in finding suitable applicants if recruiting for new staff. The programme can also be used to upskill the current workforce. We can also work with individuals wishing to move onto an apprenticeship programme and find a suitable employer.
We are also an accredited training centre and are currently offering HABC Level 1 functional skills training in both English and Mathematics which could prove to be very helpful both to those out of work long term and also those looking to apply for apprenticeships. The courses are run in Northampton and are designed for learners who wish to develop their skills in English or Mathematics to help them gain the most from work, education and everyday life. Its assessment requires the learner to apply skills-based and problem solving techniques in realistic settings. Learners will receive complimentary access to an online functional skills resource that hosts a range of engaging English materials to support learners, including initial and diagnostic assessments, tutorials and interactive learning resources.
We would love to hear from you if you believe you may yourself be able eligible to be benefit from our programmes or know someone that or you feel your organisation may be one we could work with.
We work with the belief that all our programmes offer the opportunity for learners to thrive in our environment and be motivated for change with increased self-confidence.
Primarily you will be unemployed or economically inactive and wanting to move one step nearer to employment.
