When you stand in King’s Gardens you are standing where the sea once was. There are still the remnants of the sea wall in the Gardens! If you are interested in the history of the Gardens you could always book on a guided tour – e-mail: [email protected] for more information and to arrange a tour.
The 17 acre Gardens were officially opened by King George V in 1913 and were reopened by his Granddaughter Princess Alexandra in 2014.
King’s Gardens in an amazing place to visit and, after receiving £5.5million restoration (all externally funded from the Heritage Lottery Fund) you will see many original features returned to their former glory. This includes all nine grade 2 listed shelters, the arts and carts shelter, the former ladies toilets – now a tea rooms, the landscaping (to open up views) and the introduction of a new planting scheme. The beautiful community garden is lovingly looked after by volunteers and includes one of the best play areas in Sefton, designed with the help of kids for kids.
Throughout the year there are a number of events and activities taking place in the community gardens, including outdoor cinemas and family fun days. This year, King’s Gardens are even organising the screening of an opera! What can you get up to on a visit to the gardens? Children big and small can play in the play area. Do the family like a little bit of competition? Why not visit the traditional Arnold Palmer crazy golf. Or, take to the water! Hire a rowing boat or Swan and go for a sail on the lake. If you fancy something a bit more energetic, try Southport bubble balls. There is a great rubbings trail called The King’s Trail around the gardens. You can download the booklet for the trail from: www.kingsgardens.sefton.gov.uk. Don’t forget to visit the model railway village or have a ride on the miniature railway! There is also fountain in the community garden, great for playing in on a warm day.
Take advantage of the open space; bring down a bat and ball, frisbee, hoola-hoop, cricket set, bowls, kites, remote control cars or simply sit with a book. Gather the family, bring your picnics and enjoy the serenity of King’s Gardens.
