Helping Children Stay Active During Winter

Staying inside is usually much more tempting when days are shorter and when the temperature has dropped. Wrangling your children inside during the summer months seems like a distant memory, as even the most active children can hesitate to play outside when the weather takes a turn!

So, how can we keep children active during colder months?

  • A good idea is to visit the local fitness centre and see what sports and activities that they have to offer. Swimming is often a good choice! Splash world in Southport is a great idea as it incorporates play into keeping fit and will help burn off the extra energy which has been hoarded over the colder months. Some fitness centres even have holiday clubs which run over the winter period, so it may be worth your while to see what programmes are running at your local centre.

  • You could even introduce your child to a new class or sport! Ask your child if they have any desires to try a new sport and consider signing them up. It may be the start of a brand-new hobby and most classes have indoor facilities.

  • Ice skating is another good idea when trying to hybridise fun and fitness and can be a festive day-out for the whole family to enjoy.

  • Indoor trampoline parks are all the rage at the moment and for good reason! They are a hot-spot for kids to burn off extra fuel and many places offer activities such as basketball, dodgeball and various types of classes.

It’s a great idea to make the activities mentioned a team event… incorporate the whole family! Everything is so much more fun when participating together and the familiar company will act as extra-encouragement when trying to promote fitness over (usually sedentary) winter months! Sometimes it is hard to make room for fitness in our everyday lives, but it is one of the most important things to do with your children. Promoting healthy-living and wellness, even in winter months, is one of the ways in which you can set your child up for a life of healthy physical and mental health.
